Le project: La Belgique: Your audience is people (formal register) who want to know about La Belgique before visiting it so they will be wise tourists. Not only do they want to visit Bruxelles, but they also want to see other parts, even the areas where they speak other languages. They want to experience the culture, learn about the people and their history and try new foods. Help them by developing the following resources:


Part 1: Recherche:
  • You must type your answers for this section!
  • Go to each site below in Part 1 and list 3 details from each (1-40) in French that you learned about aspects of La Belgique.
  • Then take the quiz and do the activities 41-45 in French. (Language must be accurate and your own words. How do you synthesize information? No translators-this violates the honor code, but wordreference.com is good for finding a word or two.)
  • Type this page and organize it so it is easy to follow.
  • Download the rubric and attach it to you document.
  • I will use the (IB paper 2 rubric grade: converted to 100 percentage points. This is be a writing proficiency grade)- fini le 28 février. (Keep a copy for yourself to finish other parts.)

Part 2: Recherche-Les problèmes culturels de 2 langues en Belgique:,
  • Read about how language is separating Belgium. Download and read the document and them Answer questions in English.(fini le 1er mars).
  • Find another current article or video in French that expand your knowledge about this topic.
  • Write a 50-75 word compte-rendu in French (summary-see yellow IB packet for correct format) about the current situation.-fini le 1er mars. (This will be district presentational writing rubric. It will be an assignment grade for questions about the reading.) Download the rubric and attach it to your document.


Part 3: Make a 25-35 slide Prezi, Google presentation or PowerPoint highlighting, analyzing and synthesizing what you have learned about La Belgique.
  • Use 1-2 images per slide. One each slide write text (about 8-12 words max) in French about La Belgique, etc.
  • Use advanced grammar such as: il faut, il est important de, future, conditionnal, imparfait, passé composé, present with commands. You may also use subjunctive.
  • Remember this is formal register
  • add slides: recommend 2 hotels in Brussels-1 slide;
  • add slides: recommend 2 trains (TGV) from Paris: Use SNCF.com-1 slide; give directions to centre ville from main train station and airport if people fly directly-1 slide;
  • Cite resources/pix etc. on last slide. These slides are in addition to the 25-35.
  • Bring ppt to me on flashdrive or email it or load it on the server under your name) Download this project rubric and bring it to me with your ppt.
  • This will be a project grade-100 points) Fini le 6 mars. Download the rubric and bring it with your presentation.


Part 4:Oral Presentation
  • Make an appointment with me to present your powerpoint in French.
  • When presenting you must do more and have more information that just reading the ppt. slides. You need to synthesize or analyze
  • (District Presentational speaking rubric (converted to 100% scale) This is be a presentational proficiency grade)-Make an appointment for the third week of Mars 7-9.
  • Your presentation must be about 10 minutes or more in length.


Part 5: Le Dépliant (Brochure)-the IB way-Use big yellow packet as the resource.
  • Create a brochure in French (Use IB brochure format:one you will need to know for final next year.
  • Use the yellow packet as guidance for doing the correct format for brochure) that might be in the tourist office.

Part 6-Your first IB oral exam:
  • Choose one topic about La Belgique. and develop the IB oral. (IB speaking rubric grade:.) This is be a interpersonal proficiency grade)
  • You must bring five visuals visuals as well a a note card with no more that 10 key words to use to support your presentation and our discussion. No other notes.
  • Be ready to speak for 10 minutes as well as answering my on the spot questions of your topic.
  • Download this document and fill it out. Bring it to me a week before your IB oral appt.(le 3-7 avril)

Part 2-Language Conflicts-Download to answer the questions in English on a separate piece of paper to turn in le 27 janvier. (You may need to find some answers on the Internet.) When you have finished answering the questions do this activity:

  4. How does Holland get involved?
  5. When did Belgium get independence? What happened after that in relationship to unify?
  6. What is the current linguistic political situation now?
  7. What is evidence of these conflicts?
  8. What is happening in Brussels that is adding to the conflict?
  9. How has the conflict been expanding?
  10. What is the economic side of this conflict?
  11. Now finish by reading this article and give 5 essential points. The language divide at the heart of a split that is tearing Belgium apart
